Ingredients
Scale
6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar (for apples)
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (for apples)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for topping)
1/4 cup granulated sugar (for topping)
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
Prepare the topping: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Pour the milk into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined; do not overmix. The dough will be thick.
Drop spoonfuls of the batter evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the batter dollops.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
Let the cobbler cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Serve this warm cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.
For a richer flavor, use Granny Smith apples as they hold their shape well during baking.
If you prefer a cake-like topping instead of biscuit-like, mix the topping ingredients until smooth, then spread it over the apples instead of dropping spoonfuls.
