Ingredients
Scale
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 40 to 50 minutes until the onions are deep golden brown and fully caramelized. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, grated Gruyere cheese, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder to the cream cheese. Mix until just combined.
Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the cream cheese mixture.
Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
For serving warm: Transfer the dip to an oven-safe dish. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes until heated through.
For serving chilled: Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld before serving.
Notes
You can make the caramelized onions up to three days ahead and store them in the refrigerator.
This dip tastes best when made at least 4 hours ahead of serving, even if serving cold.
Serve with sturdy potato chips, pretzel crisps, celery sticks, or toasted baguette slices.
