Whip up this easy, no-cook recipe for the best homemade hot cocoa mix. This big batch recipe creates a rich, velvety powder that tastes much better than store-bought versions. It is perfect for stocking your pantry or packaging as a thoughtful chocolate gift in a jar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups powdered milk (or substitute with 1 cup cornstarch for a non-dairy version)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (use high-quality for best flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, for depth)
  • 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, enhances chocolate flavor)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your dry ingredients: powdered milk (or cornstarch), sugar, cocoa powder, salt, cinnamon, and espresso powder if you are using them.
  2. Place all ingredients into a very large bowl.
  3. Whisk the mixture thoroughly for at least two minutes. You must mix well to break up any clumps of cocoa powder and ensure the sugar and salt are evenly distributed throughout the powdered milk.
  4. Taste a small amount mixed with hot water or milk to check the sweetness level. Adjust sugar if needed.
  5. Transfer the finished hot cocoa mix to airtight containers. This recipe makes a large batch that stores well in the pantry.
  6. To serve, mix about 1/3 cup of the dry mix with 1 cup of hot milk or water. Stir until completely dissolved and enjoy your rich, creamy hot chocolate.

Notes

  • For a richer, more decadent flavor, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
  • If you are making this mix for gifting, layer the dry ingredients in clear jars, leaving space at the top for mini marshmallows or chocolate chips. Attach a tag with the simple mixing instructions.
  • This mix stores well at room temperature for up to six months if kept in a dry, airtight container.
  • If you skip the powdered milk, you can use cornstarch for a smoother texture, though the final drink will not be as creamy unless you add extra milk when preparing.
