Recreate the famous soft, chewy restaurant-style breadsticks at home. This easy recipe delivers buttery, garlicky perfection that rivals your favorite Italian chain.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for greasing
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let this mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This shows the yeast is active.
  2. Mix the dough: Add the flour, salt, and 1/4 cup of olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix with a spoon or stand mixer until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 5 to 7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If using a stand mixer, use the dough hook for 5 minutes.
  4. First rise: Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel. Let the dough rise in a warm spot for 60 to 90 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat and prepare: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Shape the breadsticks: Gently punch down the risen dough. Divide the dough into two equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Cut each rectangle into 10 to 12 strips, about 1 inch wide. Gently stretch each strip slightly to form a breadstick shape. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Second rise (optional but recommended for softness): Cover the shaped breadsticks loosely and let them rest for 15 minutes while the oven finishes preheating.
  8. Bake: Bake for 10 to 14 minutes, or until the breadsticks are lightly golden brown.
  9. Prepare the garlic butter topping: While the breadsticks bake, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, oregano, and 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese in a small bowl. Mix well.
  10. Brush and serve: Immediately after removing the breadsticks from the oven, brush the entire surface generously with the garlic butter mixture. Sprinkle with extra Parmesan cheese. Serve warm as a perfect dinner side dish or appetizer bread sticks.

Notes

  • For an extra cheesy version, sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the tops during the last 3 minutes of baking before applying the garlic butter.
  • If you are short on time, you can use store-bought pizza dough, but the texture will be slightly different from this homemade dough recipe.
  • You can make these ahead! Bake them completely, let them cool, store them in an airtight container, and reheat them in the oven or microwave before serving.
