Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups peeled and diced apples (about 3-4 medium apples)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined to form a dough.
  4. Press about two-thirds of the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form the crust.
  5. In a separate bowl, toss the diced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  6. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust in the pan.
  7. Dot the top of the apples with the 2 tablespoons of butter.
  8. Crumble the remaining one-third of the dough over the apple layer.
  9. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  10. While the bars are baking, prepare the salted caramel. In a small saucepan, combine the heavy cream and salt. Heat over medium heat until warm.
  11. Remove from heat and stir in the butter until melted and smooth.
  12. Once the bars are out of the oven, let them cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
  13. Drizzle the prepared salted caramel generously over the warm bars.
  14. Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For an extra touch of fall flavor, you can add a pinch of ground cloves to the apple mixture.
  • If you don’t have heavy cream, half-and-half can be used for the caramel, but the consistency may be slightly thinner.
  • Ensure the bars are fully cooled before cutting for cleaner slices.
