Ingredients
Scale
1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 4 sleeves or 1 pound)
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts (optional topping)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the foil.
In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Let it boil for exactly one minute.
Pour the hot butter mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, making sure all crackers are coated.
Bake for 15 minutes.
Remove the pan from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let it sit for 5 minutes to soften the chips.
Spread the melted chocolate evenly across the crackers using an offset spatula. If using nuts, sprinkle them over the chocolate now.
Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
Break the toffee into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container.
Notes
For a different flavor, substitute milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips for the semi-sweet chips.
If you want a thicker layer of chocolate, use 1.5 cups of chocolate chips.
You can use parchment paper instead of foil, but foil makes removal easier.
