Prepare a refreshing and elegant shrimp cocktail featuring large chilled shrimp served with a zesty, homemade cocktail sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
  • Ice for chilling

Instructions

  1. Cook the shrimp: Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes until pink and opaque. Do not overcook.
  2. Immediately transfer the cooked shrimp to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Let them chill for 5 minutes.
  3. Drain the shrimp and pat them dry. Place them in the refrigerator to chill thoroughly for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce, if using. Mix well until smooth.
  5. Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings, adding more horseradish for heat or lemon juice for tang, if desired.
  6. To serve, arrange the chilled shrimp around the rim of a glass or platter. Place the homemade cocktail sauce in the center for dipping.

Notes

  • For presentation, you can form the shrimp into a wreath shape around a small bowl of sauce.
  • You can make the cocktail sauce up to three days ahead and store it covered in the refrigerator.
  • Use fresh lemon juice for the best flavor in the sauce.
